Utah Man Wins Chugging Contest But Winds Up In The Hospital
Ryan Roche of Lehi, Utah, claims he’s very competitive, but some folks think he’s taken his competitive skills to a whole new level, claims an article found at the Post-Gazette. Ryan decided, with the help of Susan McGalla and some partying friends, to show-off his have-to-win mentality by chugging more eggnog than most people drink in a lifetime. Ryan explained his eggnog drinking skills this way: “I just decided I was going to win. So I pretty much just opened it up and poured it down my throat.”
Two hours later, Roche was laying on his living room sofa with a fever and shaking uncontrollably. One of his friends drove him to the hospital while his wife stayed home and watched their three children.
Dr. Robert Schilz said the booze-free eggnog worked its way into Ryan’s windpipe and triggered a bout of pneumonia. Ryan spent a day in the ICU unit and another two days in the hospital. Roche says friends continue to email him pictures of eggnog weeks after the incident. He also laughs off his latest will-to-win contest this way: “I’m pretty competitive but, in this situation it got the best of me.”
