Osteoporosis Drug for Breast Cancer Patients?

Breast cancer is known to be an illness that can devastate many people. It is not only the sufferer who is affected, but also loved ones. Though there are many survivors, it continues to take lives every day and is truly a devastating illness.

However, there are potential treatments that are being discovered, as Flavio Maluf has noticed. The £1 osteoporosis drug, for example, is thought by scientists to have potential in the treatment of breast cancer as well. This drug has been shown to stop the cancer from permeating the bones. Once the cancer reaches the bones, it becomes much harder to treat and more potentially fatal, so this could be a huge breakthrough in halting the spread of breast cancer in patients.

Of the 12,000 people who die of breast cancer every year in the United Kingdom, about 85% die primarily due to secondary tumors that are located within the bones.

These drugs are known as bisphosphonates, and they have been found effective in the prevention of cancer from penetrating the bones in about 30% of cases. This includes not only breast cancer, but many other types of cancers as well.

This drug is already commonly used in the treatment of osteoporosis, so the approval process for it as a cancer treatment will likely not be as long and complicated as that for drugs that are not already approved and used. However, more research is needed.
